As a child, Gerard VAN DE WEERD liked sketching. His grandmother took him often to the Rijksmuseum in The Hague. He was mad of the work of Breitner.  Studying was nothing for him; drawing, advertising illustration and art history only could capture his attention.  He wanted to be a painter and became member of a painting club. But one had to work… So he became fitter at Philips, and after lift-truck driver.  In addition, he was giving lessons in portraying and model sketching, and he contributed to the magazine ‘Atelier’.
Gerard van de Weerd went in 1975 at the ‘Saturday-School’ of the Minerva Academy in Groningen (NL), with the objective of ‘painting abstraction’, but this concept was not very clear to him. Till Anton Buytendijk, his teacher said to him: “- If you want to paint a vase, you have to make sure that the brim of the neck and the bottom are visible; everything in between is not important”. Then he suddenly understood.
In 1976, Gerard van de Weerd was admitted at the ‘Evening-School’ of Minerva. Three evenings per week, five years long, and during all these years he missed only one lesson.  Here, his teachers were Ben van Voorn, Jan van Loon and Matthijs Rölling.  Gerard started as anyone with landscape painting.  Today, he paints a lot from model, but allows himself some liberties. What he likes above all is the atmosphere of his subject. But he specifies:  “-Also colors, dressing, hairstyle, and everything with a deeper signification that a painter must search for.”
In 1991, the exhibition of painter Edouard Vuillard at the Van Gogh Museum, was a revelation for him, and remained permanent source of inspiration.
Gerard van de Weerd has over the years revealed himself as one of the figureheads of the Contemporary Dutch Figurative and Realistic Movement.  His notoriety has broadened itself to the whole of The Netherlands and starts to develop at international level.  Creativity and technical skills are and remain the absolute priorities of Gerard van de Weerd, and he is still working on it with passion and unreservedly inspiration.
Gerard van de Weerd was born in Hoogeveen (NL) in 1952. He lives and works in this town today.
